QUESTIONS:

1. Which song do you prefer, #1 or #40? (Johnny Cash – Personal Jesus or Butch Walker’s Canadian Ten)
#40

2. Have you ever listened to #12 continuously on repeat? (The Beginning is the End is the Beginning – Smashing Pumpkins)
No.

3. What album is #26 from? (Green Day – !Viva la Gloria!)
21st Century Breakdown

4. What do you think about the artist who did #15? (Thelma Houston)
She’s freaking awesome. I only listen to the one song, though, not terribly into disco.

5. Is #19 one of your favorite songs? (Sia – The Church of What’s Happening Now)
No. I haven’t decided whether I like it or not yet.

6. Who does #38 remind you of? (Christine Fellows’ Saturday Night on Utopia Parkway)
Myself, I suppose.

7. Does #20 have better lyrics or music? (Damien Rice’s 9 Crimes)
Both. With Damien it’s nearly always both.

8. Do any of your friends like #3? (Nirvana’s Rape Me)
Probably not.

9. Is #33 from a movie soundtrack? (Aerosmith’s Cry Me a River)
Not that I know of.

10. Is #18 overplayed on the radio? (Marty Casey’s Baby One More Time)
LOL. No.

11. What does #21 remind you of? (Fuck You by Lily Allen)
How much I hate stupid people.

12. Which song do you prefer, #5 or #22? (Oomph! – Tausend Neue Lügen or Everlasting Friend by Blue October)
I’m going to have to go with Oomph! The meaning of the song is pretty deep and surprising. “Alles bleibt in dir bestehn.” “Everything remains in you.”

13. What album is #17 from? (Satisfaction – The Rolling Stones)
Out of Our Heads

14. When did you first hear #39? (Bree Sharp – David Duchovny, Why Won’t You Love Me)
A couple of years ago. It caught my attention because I thought the name was funny. Like funny ha-ha not funny weird. Well, maybe funny weird but in a GOOD way.

15. When did you first hear #7? (Johnny Cash’s Hurt)
Via the amazing video, around the time my Dad died. 02 or 03?

16. What genre is #8? (Ich und Elaine by 2raumwonung)
German Pop. I’m guessing.

17. Do any of your friends like #14? (Numb by Linkin Park)
My kids do.

18. What color does #4 remind you of? (Frank Turner’s Love Ire & Song)
Red.

19. Have you ever blasted #11 on your stereo? (Dead Milkmen’s Jellyfish Heaven)
Hasn’t everybody? Yes. Yes I have. Sang along, too. It reminds me of my dead brother, who is now, presumably, in Jellyfish Heaven, if he’s anywhere at all.

20. What genre is #37? (Laura Marling, Ghosts)
Indie, I’m sure.

21. Can you play #13 on any instrument? (Andrew Bird’s Imitosis)
I’m sure I could handle it on the kazoo. Maybe even the Triangle.

22. What is your favorite lyric from #30? (Blue Lips by Regina Spektor)
“He stumbled into faith and thought, ‘God, this is all there is?’”

23. What is your favorite lyric from #23? (Modern Love by David Bowie)
Not really one that I like specifically for the lyrics, but okay: “Never gonna fall for.”

24. Would you recommend #24 to your friends? (Jace Everett’s Bad Things)
Well, I don’t recommend a lot of music to my friends because I think musical tastes are so personal, but sure. It’s a fun, sexy song.

25. Is #2 a good song to dance to? (Writing to Reach You – Travis)
Yeah, not so much.

26. Do you ever hear #16 on the radio? (Fuck Was I – Jenny Owen Youngs)
Yeah, no. But then, I don’t really listen to the radio.

27. Is #32 more of a “nighttime” or “daytime” song? (As the World Falls Down – David Bowie)
Nighttime. Like one of those nights where you’re dressed as a princess and there are goblins waltzing all around you and – oh. Never mind.

28. Does #36 have any special meaning to you? (Bellx1 Eve, the Apple of my Eye)
Not really, though I did go through a phase of listening to it obsessively. I still can’t really say what it was that drew me, it just struck the right emotion at the time.

29. Do any of your friends like #31? (Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead)
Why so obsessed with my friends? No, I don’t think they would really get it. I don’t know anyone but me who enjoys being that sad.

30. Is #25 a fast or slow song? (Keiner Merkt Es, Panik)
Slow, but like a power ballad.

31. Is #35 a happy or sad song? (Be Be Your Love by Rachael Yamagata)
It’s a song of longing, so I’d say sad.

32. What is one of your favorite lyrics from #9? (Reasons Not to be an Idiot – Frank Turner)
“I bet she’s scared her life won’t leave any traces.” I think Frank Turner is a thoughtful and amazing lyricist, definitely one of the things that drew me to his music.

33. Is #34 better to listen to alone or with friends? (Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain – Willie Nelson)
Alone.

34. When did you first hear #27? (Running Up That Hill by Placebo)
When I went through a Placebo phase about 6 or 7 years ago, and gobbled up anything I could get my hands on.

35. Name 3 other songs by the artist who did #29. (Michael Stipe)
In the Sun with Chris Martin, Broken Promise with Placebo, Losing My Religion with R.E.M.

36. Do you know all the words to #6? (Oomph! Geborn Zu Sterben)
Are you kidding? I couldn’t even pronounce all of the words to #6. I’m working on that, though. I’ve started learning German, and in that spirit I’ve collected a lot of German language music. Oomph! has been one of my favorite finds, and I hope to be able to sing along someday.

37. Does #28 have better lyrics or music? (Be OK by Ingrid Michaelson)
I think they both compliment each other pretty nicely, but I suppose the fact that I related to the lyrics is probably what caught my attention first.
“Open me up and you will see
I’m a gallery of broken hearts
I’m beyond repair, let me be
And give me back my broken parts.”

38. What album is #10 from? (Monster by Lady Gaga)
The Fame Monster

Nerd, Geek or Dork?

with 2 comments

Your result for The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test…

Modern, Cool Nerd

65% Nerd, 61% Geek, 43% Dork

For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd.

Nerds didn’t use to be cool, but in the 90′s that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn’t quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very least, and “geek is chic.” The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one up there, winning the million bucks)!

Congratulations!

(Meme)nto Mori

with one comment

A simple meme picked up from ciboulette. She has a beautiful new baby at home, which makes her November almost as busy and important as mine. (Ha ha?)

Choose the sixth picture from the sixth picture folder on your computer and post it.

sixthsixth

This was taken in October from the passenger side of our now dearly departed minivan, as we passed through Portland on our way to drop Storm off in Washington. It was my first chance to play with my new camera, which meant a lot of pictures of my long suffering daughter in the backseat and the scenery blurring by through the dirty window that stopped rolling down about a month before the whole van went kaput. (Obviously a cry for help, I see that now.)

This is a really lame meme if we’re judging it by the quality of insight it gives you into my soul, but frankly I needed an easy one today. And, apparently, to reveal to the world what a slave I am to the television.

Of Trees and Happinesses

with 3 comments

Catching up on some really belated blog business (brown bear, blue bull, beautiful baboon, blowing bubbles biking backward and you don’t even want to know what happened to baby bird’s balloon, but I digress) today. An ice age or three ago I was tagged by both the lovely Alex of Holy Cow is PolyKow! and the shining Laura from Wistful Wanderlust to share 6 things that make me happy. Laura’s even came with an award. Along with a discourse about her boobs, actually, which is always a bonus.

So in no particular order (if anyone is still reading here, instead of jumping ship to Laura’s blog to find out what she has to say about her boobs. It’s okay, I get it. I’d go over there, too), 6 things that make me happy are:

1. Burt’s Bees Peppermint lip balm.

2. Overhearing when one of my kids tells another, “I love you.”

3. The drive home from mother’s house every week. (Good music, beautiful country, and why hit yourself with a hammer? Because it feels so good when you stop.)

4. Eating ice cream while watching America’s Next Top Model.

5. The shape of a tree.

6. The perfect summer evening.

I’m exercising my right to accept this award without tagging anyone at this time, since I’ll be back soon with a post in which I plan to tag absolutely everybody. Yes, everybody.

25 Random Things

with 6 comments

I originally did this meme on Facebook, reprinted here with permission from myself:

1. I prefer to go barefoot. Because of this, I think, my children automatically shed their shoes upon entering other people’s houses.
2. I hate snow.
3. I find chinchillas unspeakably creepy.
4. I’m not a dog person or a cat person – I’m a reptile person and possibly a rodent person. (Though it does depend on the rodent.)
5. I like to iron – I find it very Zen.
6. I would probably believe anything that Anderson Cooper said.
7. I would like to believe that there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy, but I’m getting old and cynical.
8. I just added Rick Springfield to my iPod.
9. I usually get depressed on Sundays. It’s the day that everything I haven’t done and think I should have catches up with me.
10. Every thing I’ve ever learned that was both useful and worth knowing came after my school years. Except multiplication tables – those have been handy.
11. My favorite color is purple.
12. My three closest friends (aside from my family) live 152 miles away, 1990 miles away, and 2849 miles away. Maybe I should have a complex about that.
13. I love thunderstorms. And fireflies. Where I live we don’t have either.
14. My ringtone is “Kill the wabbit! Kill the wabbit!” Ahem – I mean, Wagner.
15. I love horror movies of any persuasion, though there’s a special place in my heart for zombies.
16. I have a very good memory for events and conversations.
17. I tend to pick up on nuances.
18. I’m over the drama.
19. I like spaghetti.
20. I once shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.
21. My favorite author is Neil Gaiman, though my daughter discovered him first. We scoured the library looking for books that she would enjoy reading when she was about 7 or 8, and she was bored by everything targeted at her age and gender. Then she stumbled upon Coraline.
22. My musical taste is eclectic, but not discerning. I just like what I like.
23. I think Dr. Phil is evil, and because of him I don’t trust Oprah.
24. I don’t own high heels.
25. Napping is one of my favorite hobbies.
