Open Letter to MeMe Roth

Open letter to MeMe Roth of the National Action Against Obesity group in the U.S., regarding her remarks about American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and her obvious weight problem.

Ms. Roth,

I’m writing to you to express my full support of your serious concerns regarding the health and well-being of Miss Jordin Sparks, recent American Idol winner and obvious fatty.

You have been quoted as saying, “When I look at Jordin I see diabetes, I see heart disease, I see high cholesterol.

“That’s what’s so sad about this – she is not the vision of health – she is the vision of ‘unhealth’. Her extra weight is a reflection of today’s society and a culture where many of our children have compromised health due to unhealthful food choices and inactivity … We have to stop with the ‘baby fat,’ ‘curvy,’ ‘goddess’ euphemisms and own this child health crisis.”

I can’t tell you what a relief it is for me, as a mother of three children, to see someone like you taking this issue so seriously and sanely. I cringe at the thought that my own daughter, age 9, might one day decide to emulate someone like Sparks instead of the plethora of super-skinny and therefore obviously healthy role models that are available to her in the world of music, acting, and fashion.

However, I’m sure you will agree that even with such a desperate case as Miss Sparks, there is reason to hope that she will find the strength to conquer her problems as she begins her foray into the international spotlight. There she might find many, many other girls – delightfully skinny girls who I won’t name here because I’m sure you, with your discerning eye, will know the ones of which I speak – who might be called upon to reach out a helping hand to a fellow celebrity so obviously in need of guidance. Girls that can teach her how to make a meal out of a glass of water and a stick of sugarless gum for weeks at a time, for instance. Or who might share that when all else fails, a well-placed finger down the throat in the privacy of a bathroom stall can have Miss Sparks well on her way to that “vision of health” that you and I so much support.

Of course, we both know that not all skinny girls need resort to such measures, but we also know that a thin appearance is the number one key in our fight against obesity, and in urging all of our precious daughters toward longer, more fulfilling and healthy lives with good body images.

Thank you so much for making this very serious crisis of childhood obesity into such a simple, black and white issue that I can easily express to my daughter. I know now that the second I see so much as the hint of extra pounds on her lovely frame, I’ll take fast action for thinness and worry about the consequences of an eating disorder later. Appearances mean everything, and I’m glad that your group is with me in promoting this ideal.

Your biggest fan and fellow hideous beast of a human being,
Kelly Buchholz

  2. It’s really sad that someone who is working to fight obesity has to stoop to name calling and targetting our children. Children these days have enough pressure to deal with, and don’t need some horrific woman crushing their self esteem. This woman needs to pull her finger out of her throat, her head out of the toilet and get a clue.
